Jennifer Lopez is famous for her toned physique and incredible energy — and according to longtime trainer Gunnar Peterson, the secret isn’t endless cardio. Instead, it’s lifting challenging weights, eating enough protein and staying consistent year-round. Here’s how J.Lo trains — and how you can use the same principles

Jennifer Lopez has spent decades setting the benchmark for strength, fitness and seemingly ageless energy. Whether she’s performing two-hour concerts or starring in action films, one thing is always clear: she looks incredibly strong.

According to celebrity trainer Gunnar Peterson — who has also coached Khloé Kardashian, Sofia Vergara and Rebel Wilson — that physique hasn’t been built with endless hours on the treadmill.

Instead, it’s the result of consistent strength training, smart nutrition and making exercise a non-negotiable part of everyday life.

“One common denominator amongst the stars is consistency,” says Peterson. “They are not motivated — motivation can be fleeting. They simply decide the workout is happening and build the rest of their day around it.”

Here’s what Jennifer Lopez’s training philosophy can teach the rest of us.

Consistency matters more than motivation

Peterson says one misconception about celebrity fitness is that stars are somehow more motivated than everyone else.

In reality, he says, the most successful clients simply remove the decision.

“They work the schedule around training,” he explains. “It’s non-negotiable.”

That habit matters far more than relying on bursts of enthusiasm.

Why Jennifer Lopez lifts weights instead of doing endless cardio

Many women still worry that lifting heavy weights will make them bulky.

Peterson says the opposite is true.

“I encourage my female clients to overcome their fear of lifting heavy enough to generate the results they’re looking for,” he explains.

“The jury is no longer out. Lifting weights burns body fat better than all of your cardio options. Cardio is fantastic for your heart—but weights win the day.”

The goal isn’t bodybuilding.

It’s building lean muscle that increases metabolism, protects bone density and makes everyday movement easier.

Protein is just as important as your workouts

Training is only half of the equation.

Peterson encourages clients to eat significantly more protein than most people currently consume.

“We’re a carbohydrate-heavy society,” he says. “Protein is rarely accidental.”

He also recommends creatine supplementation alongside greens to help support muscle, recovery and overall health.

His advice for women over 40

Hormonal changes make maintaining muscle increasingly important.

Peterson’s priorities include:

  • Sleep for seven to nine hours.
  • Drink more water.
  • Lift weights three to four times each week.
  • Eat adequate protein.
  • Reduce alcohol.
  • Manage stress consistently.

He also warns against perfectionism.

“I see people planning more than their schedule allows and then becoming discouraged,” he says.

“Give yourself credit for what you do. Keep stacking wins. This is a very long game.”

The beginner workout Jennifer Lopez’s trainer recommends

If you’re new to exercise, Peterson believes the answer isn’t complicated.

His five-step approach looks like this:

  1. Eat something before training.
  2. Warm up with 10 to 20 minutes of movement, such as walking or skipping.
  3. Complete three to five full-body exercises – including squats, lunges, presses, planks and rows—for three to five rounds, 10-20 reps.
  4. Finish with five to 15 minutes of stretching.
  5. Recover well, get to bed at a sensible time and repeat consistently.

The Jennifer Lopez lesson

Peterson believes too many people search for the perfect programme instead of simply becoming consistent.

Jennifer Lopez’s workouts aren’t built around gimmicks or shortcuts.

They’re built around strength training, progressive overload, quality nutrition and showing up week after week.

For most women, that’s also the quickest route to a stronger body, better health and a physique that remains fit and capable for decades.
