Walk, run and explore the unique valleys and lakes in the beautiful Lake District National Park with the Altra 13 Valleys Ultra.

Taking place from 26-28 September, the Altra 13 Valleys Ultra includes a range of different event distances, including a 22km 2 Valleys event alongside three ultra distances. Open to all, the 22km event is perfect for any runners, joggers and walkers who are looking for a fitness challenge. Plus, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the UNESCO world heritage site each step of the way.

About the 22km 2 Valleys event

Starting at 10am on Saturday 27 September, the 2 Valleys event is part of the Altra 13 Valleys Ultra and covers 22km. Starting and finishing in Keswick, you’ll weave through a fully waymarked route that features a mix of tarmac and trail. The route begins with 10k of flat and steady paths before the first incline begins. After climbing your way to the top – around 500 metres of elevation gain in total – you’ll be treated to sweeping views over Borrowdale, Bassenthwaite and Thirlmere valleys. Then, begin your descent to the finish line in Keswick, where you’ll receive your locally made slate medal.

If you’re not a runner and 22km sounds intimidating, fear not: you can approach this event purely as a walking challenge. It’s open to everyone over the age of 17, no matter your fitness level. With a generous eight-hour cut-off time, this accessible event is ideal for first-timers who are ready to take their first steps into the world of fitness events.

Getting to the event

If you’re not local to the Lake District, there are plenty of accommodation options nearby in Keswick. Even if you’re only taking part in the Saturday 2 Valleys event, why not make a weekend of it?

It’s worth noting that there is limited parking at local car parks and you’ll need to book your space in advance. To keep the event as green as possible, the event organisers are actively encouraging participants to use local travel links. Drivers are encouraged to lift share where possible, with a levy being placed on vehicles with less than three occupants. Or, leave the car behind and opt for the three hour direct train from London to Penrith.
